Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

This pretty much sums up Boston for me:

Four weeks ago I didn't even think I would be able to run the Boston Marathon. Today I was able to participate in one of the most awesome experiences in my life. The crowds were absolutely incredible and the noise at points was deafening. At certain points it almost brought tears to my eyes. The people here are truly amazing - and I am thankful that I could make it, be able to run (and finish!), be a part of this experience and to share it with my Gazelle family.

As for the race itself, I thought a 3:05 was entirely possible, and at a minimun a 3:10 - alas, it was not meant to be, the heat and lack of miles in the legs did me in.  I ran a 1:31ish half, but the hills and heat and lack of mental fortitude did me in.

Still - awesome experince and in the end I was happy just to have been there.

Great report. To the point. It seems the experience made up for the few minutes you went over 3:10. Very impressive time especially with the lower mileage. Have a good weekend!

Nice run, David - glad you were able to have a good experience...that's what it's all about.

Great race. I was wondering what is taking so long for the update. considering what you had to deal with during training you rocked this one.

Thanks all - you definitely can't cheat the marathon - basically 6 weeks of no running is hard to over come.

It was a great day in Boston. Nice run.

3:13 is really solid, considering the 6 week lapse in training AND you also have not raced anything in a whole year!

From flatlander on Thu, May 01, 2014 at 21:25:24 from 76.31.9.237

Great race under the circumstances, congratulations. 3:13 is a very good time even though it didn't meet your expectations and standards. Great that you went out there despite the training lapse; I did not do that last year.
