Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

I had a physical today.  I was sitting for a couple minutes when the nurse took by heart rate.  She looked at me and asked if I was a runner.  Her first words.  My resting heart rate in a sitting position was 40.  I would like to know what it is when I am sleeping.  They did an EKG as well,  I will be interested in the results of that.

The Dr. wasn't too worried as long as I don't get symptoms of dizziness or fatigue.

5.25 easy miles on the trail at lunch.  Legs still sore.  I failed to mention in my race report that the race had a 10 mile option as well.  In fact, the 10 miler is the main attraction.  So after the 5k I went up and started running away from the finish line.  I picked up the first runner that I knew that looked like he was hurting and brought him in.  I then turned around and did this for maybe 5 or 6 more runners, I can't remember for sure.  Anyway, I was running pretty fast during those stints so my legs took some more punishment on top of the 5k.  Maybe that is why my legs are still sore.

My running mind wants to go out for 4 more this evening buy my rational mind says no way.  Saturday's workout is 3 x 1 mile at 5k or faster speed so I need to make sure I am fully recovered.

Are you ever dizzy when you first step out of bed in the morning?

You're a great encourager, can you come and pull me in on my next marathon?

Not so much when I get out of bed, but if I am sitting for a while or playing on the floor with my kids, and then I stand up, yes I get dizzy. It only lasts for 15-20 seconds. The Doc didn't seem concerned about this as long as it goes away. I read somewhere that this is common in runners.

If you run one close I will be more than happy to pace you for the last 10 miles!
