Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

Wonderful morning - a bit cool  to start - high 20's - but once the sun broke it warmed up nicely.

We did 16 miles with 9 @ MGP.  I tried to push the last 2 a bit.  Overall good run.

Hi Der Hammer,

Looks like you'll be ready for the race in a couple of weeks! I'm trying to figure out what I should do different before the race. I did go buy some new shoes since the ones I had wore through the hard sole after only 250 miles. Do you know any others running in the race? Still would like to meet up sometime before the race. Well...I'm going out for 20 now...

Hi there,

New shoes at this point is good - you want to have some miles on them before you race in them.

I know quite a few people from our group running the full and half. There are about 6 of us starting together for the full. I don't know if the half has pace groups or not. Usually the pace groups are only for the full.

You don't have to worry about tapering as much as you would for a full. I wouldn't run any hard miles the week of the race. Though you might want to do a few miles at your goal pace and maybe some pick ups. Take it super easy from 2-3 days out. At this point you are not going to gain anything from a hard workout. Nutrition is also not as critical for a half vs. a full, though you will definitely want to load up on carbs 1-2 days before the race. 4-5 grams of carbs per pound of body weight - try to eat as little fat and protein as possible.

I will probably be at the Expo on Friday and avoid the crowds. What is your schedule?

I was thinking about going on Friday also to pick up my stuff. Let's talk before then. I really don't know anyone in the race...actually I don't even know but a couple of runners.

Thanks for the advice on preparing for the race. I kinda think I know what I'm going to do (pace wise) to make sure I don't blow it and burn myself out. I am going to run another Half Marathon two weeks later here in San Marcos...that's when I'll push myself...Ha ha...whatever that means.
