Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

I planned on doing some cross training today but when I arrived at the gym the spinning class was full.  I hemmed and hawed and decided to go out for a run.

I went out on a "Zen" run - no watch, no mileage, no pace, no time.  I took a completely new course so I had no idea how far I had run.  It was a perfect morning; overcast, misty, and a slight breeze.  I was a great run.  I came back to the gym in just over an hour, so I will put 7 miles down as a good estimate by effort.  I think I will do more of these.  It is liberating to be unencumbered from technology for once.

I think I may be obsessed with my Garmin - GPS & Heart Rate... I just keep crunching numbers trying to convince myself (or encourage myself) I can reach my goals. Don't look at my milage log for today...I probably did something I really shouldn't have done.

So you're really going to Boston...April 2012..?

I wouldn't worry about it - that is how those ultra runners go out and run 30-40 mile runs - they run them slow. At those paces I don't think there is anything wrong with that kind of mileage.

Good job. I bet you are glad you stuck with Austin at this point. If anything I think this weekend is warmer than last.

Hey Flat - where have you been? I didn't see a post since Wednesday.

Yes, I made the right choice after all. It would have cost me $300 and a weekend to drive up there and it would have been the same or warmer weather!
