Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David. 

 I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years. 

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

OK - what to do?  It's 2:30 PM and 90 degrees outside.  It is going to be super boring but 10 miles on the indoor track at the gym in 1 hour and 16 minutes.  Actually not as bad as it sounds.

Met up with James and Tom for an easy run - we went on Scenic and then back on Expo - wanted to get off the trail as it is getting a bit boring.  I added about 2.5 afterwards - no one had a watch so I am saying 12 miles knowing the route.

7 miles - I honestly didn't feel like running until I opened the door to find cool air hitting my face.  63 degrees felt splendid.  7ish at a good clip - no watch.

Weighed myself on Saturday at the gym - same scaled I have been using - just a hair below 161 - I'll take it.  Lots of base, drop some more weight, and then build up the strength again - that's the plan anyway.

4.25 at lunchtime.

6 early with 5 x short hill sprints to loosen up those hips!  There was a lone deer standing next to the street at the top of the hill watching me.  When I walked down she was about 3 feet way staring at me.  I asked her if she though I was crazy but she didn't answer.  Her eyes said it all.  :-)

4.5 miles at lunchtime on Townlake trail. I had to work downtown today so I had a chance to take advantage of it.  Ran a mile to Zilker park and ran a couple on the grass and then back.  Hot!

3 out and 3 back - lots runners out in the neighborhood - where are these people when it's 40 degrees, windy and raining?

8 miles in 59 minutes on the indoor track.  It was too hot out by the time I had a chance to run.  Finally broke 60 for a week.

Finally cracked 161 pounds.  It took a full week to lose a pound - looks like the "easy" loss is over.

Met up with a couple guys and did a 9 mile loop on the trail - added an out and back at the I-35 bridge.  Then ran 3 on the greenbelt trail.  Hot and tired.  Jumped in the springs after for a good cool down.

Gave up my Tuesday am run for my wife's Tri training and did not have a chance to run at lunchtime.  So I went to the gym after work - did 3.6 miles on the indoor track, then 50 mins spinning class. then 3.4 miles on the indoor track.  Going to give myself 3 miles for the spinning.

6 miles in the am - seem to be doing a bit better in the heat.  Funny, because when I drive to work with the windows open if feels so nice out - but running in it is such a difference.

Anyway, first mile @ 8:50, last mile @ 6:40, with some low 7's in between.  8 x 12 second STEEP hill sprints afterwards.  I will start adding these once a week getting to 10, and then add a second day.

 

The plan is to go out at lunchtime for 4 more.

hot and humid and hills - a hard slog, and someone decided to steal the groups water and gatorade barrels on our route.  Fortunately we found a water hose at an office building.  Close to 70 miles this week.

6 in the am and 4 at lunchtime.  Wow it was hot at 1 PM - I was hit with a wall of heat when I walked outside.  At least there is less humidity during the day.

Woke up to showers - decided to go for it - the rain cleared up around mile 3 but came back at mile 7 and opened up with 2 miles to go.  Stood under some cover for about 5 mins to let the deluge pass.  It was actually nice and cool running in the rain compared to what it has been.

10 miles in 1 hour 14 minutes - 9:18 first mile - 6:40 last mile.  AP 7:30.

6 at lunchtime in the heat - 90's and sunny, then 6 at the indoor track after work.  Finally cracked 161 on the scale - looks like a pound a week at this point.  It's a lot of work!  I think my body is fighting back.   Granted, there's not much left to go but 5-10 pounds of fat maybe.

11 miles on an out-and-back from the house.  It was a warm and humid one, for sure.  Found a water barrel and then caught it on the way back.  This time there were a couple of other runners getting water.  Turns out they are from my running group but the North group.  Seems they do long runs right in my neighborhood.  I'll have to look into that since they are supported with water stops, etc.  It's a smaller group so not sure I there will be anyone that I can run with but it would be a nice option in the event I don't feel like driving downtown to the main group.

10 x 12-13 second STEEP hill sprints after the 11 miles.  

Traveling to Lima, Peru for business on Sunday - the plan is to use the time to take a couple days off and rest the ankle.  It will be hard not to run because it's 60 degrees down there now!
