Personal:

Der Hammer is a nick name I picked up from my German friends while living in Germany. My real name is David.

I have been running seriously since March 2007.  I started with a local running group called "Gilbert's Gazelles".  Before that I had run a couple 5k's (26:00's) and never run more than 3 miles at one time.  I have lost about 40 pounds in a little over 2 years.

I am 45 years old, married and have 2 children, ages 5, girl, and 10, boy.  I try to keep my running from interfering with my family as much as possible, e.g. getting up at 5 am.  However, Saturdays are long run days and I don't come home until around 9 am or so.  I owe my family a debt of gratitude for allowing me to pursue this passion.

35 degrees and light rain/mist.  It's the annual Black Eyed Pea run - a loosley organaized fun run  - this year though it's around the trail instead of the point-to-point that it has been in the past.  Good turnout - maybe 150 plus people.  Coffee, Mimosas and black eyed peas await at the end.

Met up with Dan and Sam - we parked about .5 miles away so we ran slowly to the start.  Sam had a progressive run planned so we decided on the 11.5 mile route - easy 3 and then pick up the pace - that was the plan.  The trail was soggy, lots of puddles, and the it was hard slogging.  But we managed.  We picked up a couple of other runners and the pace was pushed early.  We dropped Sam somewhere on the back 5, but I had to make a bathroom stop at about mile 8 and he caught back up, while the other 2 runners kept going.  I dropped Sam again, I think he was struggling, but I was done at the 10 mile mark - waited for Sam to catch up and we finished to the "Rock" and then ran easy back to the finish.  Paces don't reflect the effort, IMO.  I think they would have been faster on the road.

Ran this little informal 5k at my wife's conference out in Palm Springs.  They had a lead bike and cones and a few volunteers out there.

It was 3:30 in the afternoon to start - 65 degrees - at least there was some cloud cover.

Watch would not boot up so I had to use my phone, which wasn't giving me my pace - there was one other 20 year old guy that has run some marathons that I thought would give me a run for my money - but I lost him after mile one.  Pretty much lost it towards the end of mile two - hard to keep motivated all alone and with no crowds but I managed to get the last portion back down there.

Mile 1 - 5:45 - this probably doomed me because I am not in that shape yet.

Mile 2 - 6:10 or so

Mile .8 - course was woefully short - I haven't calculated my pace yet.

2.8 miles in 16:45 is the time I was given by the guy who had the stop watch.

I chalk it up as a training run - at least I took first place overall and won a cool fitbit.

1 mile warm-up and then 4.3 miles after the race with my wife - who won second female which was cool for her.

2.25 mile warm up to the track to meet the group.

The schedule said 1000's so I thought that would be perfect, but when I got there I was told by the coach it was 1 x 2000m, 3 x 1000m and 4 x 400.

I figured if I did the first 2 parts that would be 5k at pace.  Well, I jumped in with the very fast group which made the first 2k go by, even though I fell back on the last lap.  1ks were good, the last one hurt though. I took a couple minutes recovery and then ran the 400's too.

Are you running the 3M?

From derhammer on Tue, Jan 20, 2015 at 08:18:44 from 64.245.52.2

@Yasir - thanks - healthy again so trying to stay around 50 a week,

IRJ - no, I am not, not in half marathon shape. I could just run it but I have better ways to spend $120.

Are you coming up?

From I Just Run on Tue, Jan 20, 2015 at 12:06:12 from 67.79.11.242

DR,

No...I'm not running it either. I have had it on my radar for several weeks but with the foot problem haven't been able to train the way I wanted. Today's run was my last ditch effort to see where I was conditioning wise. Although I think I could run a decent race it would only be decent. All I'm interested in now is PR's.

From derhammer on Wed, Jan 21, 2015 at 09:46:16 from 64.245.52.2

IJR - I am in the same boat. Only interested in PR's. BUT I do think it makes sense to run several races of the goal race to get there, for example, running a few 5k's with training to reach my 5k PR, that makes sense. So IF you were gunning for a key half PR sometime in the spring it might make sense to run some halves knowing you probably were not going to PR but that those races would help you get there.

no time to run in the am or at lunch so I went out after my wife came home from her swim training.  Out the door around 9:15 PM.  60's with stiff breeze. 2.25 mile warm up and then 4 @ tempo pace. 1 mile cool down.  I thought I would try to run the tempo about 10 seconds slower per mile that my previous couple of tries so I could start to get my legs used to these.  Now I can work on lowering the pace or extending the workout a bit.

From derhammer on Thu, Jan 29, 2015 at 09:35:59 from 64.245.52.2

Lol - my wife passed me on the way to school with the kids and she asked me why I was running away from work - I had to explain that I had to add miles to get a full workout in since it's only 5 miles away.

We have full shower facilities here. ;-)

From flatlander on Thu, Jan 29, 2015 at 09:44:31 from 76.31.29.220

I have facilities at work too, but it is too far away to run in, it would be a marathon +1 just to get there, not to mention several sketchy neighborhoods. Then when I am actually at work I never get around to putting everything down, getting dressed, going out for a run in the heat and showering. The whole process takes an hour in addition to the actual run time, so two hours just to get 6 miles. Sigh.

From SlowJoe on Thu, Jan 29, 2015 at 19:17:50 from 104.51.208.13

Nice tempo! And you were multitasking the whole time, getting to work.

I'm lucky to have a gym with showers at work too. Real time saver... Figured out I could leave my desk, change, run 4 TM miles, shower, get dressed and be back in exactly 1 hour if I'm quick enough.

Good run - I'd say depends on what you're trying to accomplish, are you working on a certain race pace? I've done 800s at 3k, 5k and 10k pace. You could do some slower with 60s rest, or go for 5k pace or faster with more rest...

For general fitness I like the old CV workout - 8 x 800 on, 200 off but more like 3:00/rep.

If you're working on a 5k, I think what you did is good, just whatever rest is required to finish the reps at your pace.

In the process of getting ready for the 3 hour trip to Huntsville we got a text saying that his knee gave out at 17 miles - he tried to keep going but decided to pack it in at mile 20 after getting through the first loop.

I think we were all pretty bummed out about it but we met up later in the evening after he got back for a few drinks.

Cold and raining in Austin so went to the gym in the afternoon - 9 miles.

Quad is more of an annoyance than anything.  I think it will be OK if I skip the fast stuff for a week or so.

Oh, a friend wanted to complete the 100 mile race, and a buddy and I were going to go down and pace/help him through laps 4 and 5 - each lap is 20 miles.

Off the wall question: Do dogs chase you on country roads in Holland? That is a perpetual problem in Texas (probably anywhere else in the U.S. as well).

From derhammer on Wed, Mar 04, 2015 at 10:43:59 from 64.245.52.2

Flat - this is one of the things that my wife had to adjust to when she came to the US - how many dogs were loose, tied to a tree in someone's front yard (thankfully I don't see to much of that anymore) and all in all the treatment of dogs in general in the US, but especially Texas. I have never seen a loose dog in Holland, and that pretty much goes for much of that region. Maybe it happens, but I have never seen it.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for checking in.

Well, I bought a road bike and have been cross training and lots of strength training - it seems to be a little bit better.

I've tried everything out there - not sure what else to do at this point other than continuing what I am doing.

From derhammer on Wed, Aug 19, 2015 at 21:04:40 from 70.113.16.126

Things are progressing slowly - I have been running a mile here and there. Found that cycling - hills especially, just make things worse. So lots of cross training, swimming and even walking. Been getting treated for it - working all the knots and tightness out of my calf. Stretching, exercises - everything I should be doing. It's pretty frustrating.

JG - I bought one of those last time you mentioned it - seems too tight to go all night and it didn't seem to be helping, also tried the stretching sock, inserts, just about everything.

From derhammer on Thu, Aug 27, 2015 at 10:04:24 from 64.245.52.2

Went to a highly rated podiatrist yesterday - he gave me a stretch to perform every morning before getting out of bed, got fitted for custom orthotics, and he prescribed 3 steroid injections in the heal. I got the first shot yesterday, and I will get the next 2 spread 2 weeks apart. He said he has something like a 98% success rate with this treatment, and told me I should start running again. So we will see how this goes.

Well, a group of us were going to meet for a send off for our buddy. He's in Austin on a 2 week leave from his year assignment at Djibouti, and today was his last day.

I got to the meeting point - it was dark, raining, and no one was there except for one other runner.  So we did a nice run around Town Lake and then some on the trail.

Fortunately the run ends at Taco Deli, for some after run food and coffee.
